ABOUT ZARA

Zara was founded by Amancio Ortega Gaona (Ortega) and his wife Rosalía Mera in 1975 in downtown Galicia in the northern part of Spain. Its first store featured low-priced copies of products of prevalent, higher-end clothing and fashion. By 1983, Zara had established a firm grip over Spanish consumers with its emphasis on fashion and its business model. In 1985, Inditex was founded as a holding company for Zara and its manufacturing plants. In 1988, the company started growing internationally with the opening of a Zara store in Oporto, Portugal.
